Tom Foote

Tom Foote was born in Crosshaven, Co. Cork, Ireland, in 1935 and was educated in England and Ireland. In 1953, at the end of his formal education, he went to sea and served on a variety of merchant ships as a Radio Officer. This service took him around the world to many places that at that time were untouched by air travel.

Later, he travelled to Canada where he was engaged in air traffic control in Montreal. This was followed by a stint as a civilian technician where he served with the United States Air Force on the DEW line in remote Northern Canada. Afterwards he then worked for a number of years at the Fylingdales Early Warning Radar Site in North Yorkshire.

More recently he was employed by DIgital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in Ireland and Holland before taking early retirement in order to devote his time to sailing and writing.

A keen sailor, Tom is a member of the Irish Cruising Club and has cruised his boat extensively. He lives with his wife, Hilary, in Galway in the west of Ireland.
